The Mystery of Teenage Brain

Hi P-assengers! Welcome back with us, PIDAS81. Well, as you can see from the title, this time we will discuss the teenage brain. What is the mystery behind the brain which is famous for its instability? Well, sometimes we see a lot of teenagers who have a “unique” mindset. Not as childish as a little kid but it’s not classified as an adult either. Based on several studies, it’s stated that the brains of adults indeed have different ways of working from the teenager’s brains. But why? This is because their brain still in the middle of development as known as the transition period.

In adolescence, part of the brain who is in charge of making a decision, the prefrontal cortex is not yet fully functional. The development of this part is less rapid than the limbic system, which is the part of the brain that regulates emotions and behavior. Because teenagers are more dominated by their emotions, most of them become unstable, spontaneous, and rather impulsive. In contrast to adults who tend to rely on their logical and rational thinking.

Apart from those characteristics we also sometimes find that many teenagers pay attention to what other people say, especially their friends. At this age, they begin to be able to think abstractly and their social anxiety increases. This is how they begin to worry about how other people think of them. So if your friends start wearing make-up and beautifying themselves in front of others, this may be one of the reasons. This isn’t bad, in fact sometimes taking care of ourselves like do a skincare routine or make ourselves more attractive can increase our confidence, just remember to not cross the line.

Besides, the teenager’s brain is designed to seek new experiences and sensations, so they’re more vulnerable to taking a lot of risks. Although it’s not 100% bad again, because they’re still dominated by their emotions, they still don’t have the “perfect” judgment and a long term logical thinking. So these traits tend to plunge them into a problem. Especially with bad external encouragement and promiscuity.

This is why teenagers need guidance from their parents and teachers, for them to make the right decisions in life. It’s also during this period that a person’s character is formed. If they grow up in an unhealthy environment it will give a permanent bad impact until they become an adult, part of the society. On the other side, if they were guided from a young age to the “right” track, they will have a good personality and will continue to be carried away until they become an adult.

Now we know why teenagers often have mood swings and tend to be careless In making decisions. That way we know how important adult guidance is, even though we may feel it’s unnecessary but it is one of the keys to character building. So that’s all from PIDAS and see you in our fun yet educational articles. Bye P-assengers!
