Howdy P-assengers!, how was your week? On a scale of 1 to 10 we hope your week was an absolute 10. We finally meet again in another PIDAS’s weekly article and today’s topic is gonna be about cultural appreciation and cultural appropriation. What are those? Which one should we do and which one we should avoid? We’re gonna answer those questions in this article so stay tuned till the end!
Starting with the positive one, quoted from greenheart.org, cultural appreciation is when someone wants to understand and learn about another culture in an effort to broaden their perspective and connect with others cross-culturally. While cultural appropriation is taking an aspect of another’s culture and using it for your own personal interest just like an exploitation.
Just from the meaning we already know which one we should avoid right. But why is cultural appropriation so harmful? It’s because those who do cultural appropriation, whether intentional or not, adopt cultural elements of another culture (usually the minority one) in a disrespectful and/or stereotypical way.
While appreciating another culture could gain us more information and help us understand those cultures, cultural appropriation can be an act of ridicule and insult to the culture. Many people do that as a form of joke or trend. For example wearing blackface, clothing with spiritual significance when you don’t practice it, fox eye makeup trend, etc.
Do you guys ever encounter someone who does cultural appropriation? If it’s someone you know, don’t forget to remind them to not do that again. What do you guys think about today’s article? We hope it’s helpful and see you guys later. Goodbye P-assengers!
