How Do I Know My Phobia?

Hello, P-assengers! Back again with PIDAS’s article. How are you, P-assengers? Hopefully, you guys are happy and healthy. According to the title above, we will discuss phobias. Have you ever experienced a fear of something and felt unable to face it? Or think strange things about the object you are afraid of?

Is the fear we often experience the same as a phobia? Certainly not. The American Psychiatric Association concludes that phobias are the most common mental disorder among women and the second most common among men. What mental disorders does the patient experience? Mental disorders in phobias are one type of anxiety disorder in which sufferers experience fear followed by excessive anxiety about certain objects or situations. 

While fear, in general, is the emergence of fear that makes us care about a situation or object that we are afraid of, provided we can deal with it. The attitude of caution that is felt is anxiety just like people with phobias, it’s just that the anxiety that people with phobias have is so excessive that the sufferer is unable to deal with it.

Now, you know the difference between fear and phobia. But, do you know what kind of anxiety is a phobia? There are several signs of a phobia that you need to know!

  1. Physical:
  • Feeling unsteady, dizzy, or lightheaded
  • Feeling like you are choking
  • A pounding heart, palpitations, or accelerated heart rate
  • Chest pain or tightness in the chest
  • Sweating
  • Hot or cold flushes
  • Shortness of breath or a smothering sensation
  • Nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea
  • Numbness or tingling sensations
  • Trembling or shaking
  1. Psychological:
  • Fear of fainting
  • Fear of losing control
  • Fear of dying
  • Feeling out of touch with reality, detached from your body, or dissociation

If your symptoms are very intense, they could trigger a panic attack. As a result, many people with phobias avoid situations that might trigger their phobia. This solution might feel effective at first. Phobias can be caused by trauma. For that, if you feel this phobia is very disturbing to your activities and productivity, you should immediately consult a psychiatrist or psychologist for therapy or direction. That way the traumatic event that you experience further mental disorders. Don’t be late to go check with the right person.
