A Javanese Traditional Salad: Pecel

Halo P-assengers! We’re back in Pidas81’s weekly article. How’s life this far? I hope it will always be great. As you can see from the title, we can talk about “Pecel”. Probably as an Indonesian, we know what pecel is. But, do you know the history of pecel? So, stay tuned until the end, ya!
First of all, pecel is a traditional vegetable dish/salad drenched with peanut sauce. From indonesiar.com, “Usually pecel vegetables in the form of spinach, kale, sweet potato, cassava leaves, beluntas leaves, gotu kola leaves, kecombrang, pods, long beans, winged bean, sprouts. The pecel sauce made from refined peanut crushes has a sweet, sour, spicy and savoury taste.”
On a book called “Babad Tanah Jawi” Sunan Kalijaga met Ki Gede Pamanahan on the river bank at midday. Then, Ki Gede Pamanahan served a plate of vegetables with chilli pecel, rice, and other side dishes. Sunan Kalijaga then asked, “What is this dish?” and Ki Gede Pamanahan answered, “Puniko ron ingkang dipun pecel,” which means “These are leaves that are boiled and squeezed in the water”.
It’s called “pecel” because Ki Gede Pamanahan said “dipun pecel” means squeezed the water.
