So, what exactly is Nusantara Theater? Nusantara Theater is an art performance in the form of drama with nuances or backgrounds typical of Nusantara, Indonesia. Indonesian traditional theater usually doesn’t use story scripts and frees players to do it according to their improvisation. So, here are examples of Traditional Nusantara Theater:
- Wayang
Wayang orang or often called puppet. Who doesn’t know what wayang is? P-assengers may know the famous wayang/puppet characters, namely Gatotkaca, Petruk, Arjuna, etc. Wayang Orang was created by Sultan Hamangkurat I in 1731 and is one of the traditional Javanese performing arts.
- Lenong
Lenong is one of the most famous theaters in Betawi. Based on the contents of the story, there are Lenong Dines who tells the old saga, and Lenong Preman who tell about the problems of people’s lives.
- Ketoprak
Ketoprak comes from Central Java, Yogyakarta, and surrounding areas. Ketoprak was first staged around 1909. The theme of the ketoprak story is usually from the legend and history of the land of Java.
