Revenge Bedtime Procrastination

Hello, P-assangers! Do you have a hard day recently? What does P-assangers usually do when you decide to take a break? Surely there will be many types of activities that we do when we take a rest. But, have you ever intentionally procrastinated your sleep schedule just to squeeze in some “me-time”? This phenomenon is called “Revenge Bedtime Procrastination”. Revenge bedtime procrastination meaning is the same as “staying up late in a revenge-way”. What’s the meaning of that? It means we force ourselves mentally after a day being monopolized by our duties and responsibilities. We claim that the night is the only time for “me-time” and “in control of the situation.” The phrase went viral in English on Twitter after a post by New York-based journalist Daphne K. Lee.

Sleep procrastination is still an emerging concept in sleep science, P-assangers. As a result, there are ongoing debates about the psychology behind this voluntary sleep reduction. According to psychotherapist Daryl Appleton, C.A.G.S, LMHC, although there is no exact psychological term for this behavior, the motivation behind it is simple: control. When we feel like we can’t control our days, we compensate by exercising control over our nights so we don’t feel helpless.

P-assangers need to know how to prevent this phenomenon. The best remedy for procrastinating sleep is healthy sleep hygiene, which involves creating good sleep habits and an environment that is conducive to sleep. Examples of positive sleep habits are:

  • Maintain consistent sleep and wake times, including outside of the workday
  • Avoid caffeine in the afternoon or evening
  • Stop using electronic devices, including cellphones and tablets, for at least half an hour, and ideally longer, before going to bed
  • Develop a steady routine to use each night to prepare you for sleep
  • Relaxation methods, such as reading a book, meditating, or gentle stretching, can become part of your bedtime routine and help make it easier for you to sleep. Relaxation techniques can also reduce stress, which can lead to postponement of revenge sleep.
