Intercultural literacy. Have you ever heard that phrase? Intercultural literacy is an ability to interact and communicate within a community that consist of many social classes. Intercultural literacy could also be said as an ability to adjust within a cultural community in accordance with understandings, attitudes, competencies, and identities. The goal of this concept is to reach an effectiveness of communicating and understanding each other as a globalized person.
As We aid before, every community have different social classes. Each hierarchy level should understand others. The important thing here is the word ‘community’ doesn’t always refer to a small group. It could refer to a bigger one, or even a country. Could you imagine that one united country is separated due to a chaos that was sparked by a misunderstanding between its social levels? This scenario would happen tragically if there’s no intercultural literacy.
Nowadays, we’re living in a community with many different cultural states. Then, this ‘intercultural’ would develop into ‘cross-cultural’ concept. So, what is a cross-cultural literacy? Basically, it’s the same as intercultural literacy. But one different thing here is this concept talks about how to adapt, interact, and communicate within a community that has many different cultural states. We all have to consider that this concept is taking place right now.
However, not every person will act as it’s supposed to be inside an intercultural or cross-cultural community. Intolerance, inappreciative, and selfish are just several forms of misleading in its practice inside the community. Then, what we have to do? First thing first, educate ourselves. We have to understand exactly the real meaning of intercultural and cross-cultural literacy. Then, make it a as a habit. At first, P-assengers may feel depressed and forced by the situation, but you’ll get used to it. Last but not least, educate our surroundings. These three steps will help us to actualize the concept of intercultural and cross-cultural literacy in our community.
